Problems Accessing Ebsco Databases from Home

We're continuing to experience problems access Ebsco databases off-campus this morning.  This includes Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete, Communication and Mass Media Complete, and many others.

One work-around is to access these databases remotely via OhioLINK authentication.  Go to:
http://www.ohiolink.edu/resources/dblist.php?by=alpha&search=ahttp://www.ohiolink.edu/resources/dblist.php?by=alpha&search=a

Locate your database by name, then click on the "Off-Campus URL."  You will be prompted to select your school,  and enter your name and barcode.  Remember to enter your barcode (you can leave off the leading zeros) rather than your UAnet ID.

Trying to access databases from home?

Here's a shortcut, but these steps will only work for OhioLINK-Sponsored Databases.

Type this address (or follow the link): https://auth.ohiolink.edu

Please select your institution: “University of Akron.”

Enter your name: “Last name, first name.”

Enter your student ID number.

Enter your Library PIN.

Wait for the “Authentication Successful” message.

Browse for the database of your choice (by subject, type, or name).

Click on the “Off-Campus URL” link.

You should stay authenticated for a couple of hours, or until you close your browser window.

If you want to use a database not available via OhioLINK's remote authentication, then you should set up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) on your home computer. Instructions for setting up a VPN are available here.

Getting into Databases from Home

If you're like me and trying to search the databases from home this weekend, you may have noticed some subtle changes to the UA Libraries page.

In order to access the databases from home, please consider establishing a VPN (virtual private network) as this ensures that you will have access to every database from home. Detailed instructions are available at: http://www.uakron.edu/libraries/info/connect/#vpn

You may have already discovered that clicking on the database name without first establishing a VPN connection will result in taking you to the vendor's password page. You will be unable to log in on this page.

If you are unable to set up a VPN, your next best bet would be to go to the Ohiolink database list, and click on the "off campus URL" link for the database you want to use. This will start the authentication process that many are already familiar with.
