UA Libraries Catalog Down on Tues. 2/21/12

An upgrade to the UA Libraries server is expected to occur on Tuesday, February 21st between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. This will affect access to the library's catalog, but not other subscription library databases.

While the server is down, users will not be able to search the UA library catalog, view their patron records, request items locally or via OhioLINK, or use the OhioLINK Remote Authentication Service. Users may use the OhioLINK Central Catalog to locate items in the UA collection.

Please see the library staff during the upgrade for assistance during the upgrade.

Expected Delays in Library Materials Delivery

Students, faculty, and staff are asked to remain quiet in the library during this week and turn off their cell phones before they enter the library. Headphones are available at the information desk for anyone wishing to listen to audio on their computers.

Silence will be enforced in the study table area, community room, and library lab. Students wishing to use the group study rooms are also asked to refrain from loud discussions and to close the door when studying with groups.

Humane Society Fundraiser Thank You!

Many thanks to all who participated in the Library’s annual Fall fine forgiveness campaign. Our total collections included 71 cans of food, 62 pounds of dry food, 2 bags of treats and $135.66 in cash. All proceeds were donated to the Wayne County Humane Society. A special “Thank You” goes out to all of the folks who donated cash and items even though they did not have any library fines.

Wayne College Library has a solution!

During the month of October the library will be collecting the following items for the Wayne County Humane Society in lieu of library fines:

Dry kitten / cat food
Dry dog / puppy food
Canned cat / dog food
Cat litter

One item donated will equal one dollar off accrued fines. Bagged items will be given a one dollar credit for every pound.

When paying fines with cash, patrons will be given a 50% discount on the total fine owed. Sorry, we cannot forgive charges associated with lost materials replacement as part of this fine forgiveness campaign.

If you do not have any library fines, the library will accept any contributions to help the Humane Society. See a full list of the most urgent needs on their website.

Please help the library staff welcome our newest staff member, Tina Kilcullen. Tina joins the library staff as a Library Associate, Senior, with primary responsibilities including answering questions at the information desk, library acquisitions, and archives.

Tina is well-acquainted with working in a college library as she was previously employed as a student assistant as the Kent State Stark Campus Library. Tina's previous experience also includes working as a Credit Assistant and Consumer Loan Office with KeyBank and a Sales Assistant with Regal Construction.

This year the library collected 518 items and $70 in cash as part of our annual “Food for Fines” fine-forgiveness campaign. These items were donated to Wooster’s People to People Ministries. "Springboard, Exchange will be offline Sunday, March 13
On Sunday, March 13, from 1 to 9 p.m., Information Technology Services will perform an upgrade on one of UA's main storage systems. To perform this upgrade, some popular resources will be offline: Exchange, Springboard, Zipspace, Videomedia, departmental file (such as your H: drive) and printing.
This upgrade will enable us to keep up with the growing demands for storage space for things like online course content, streaming video content and providing new Web services."

Please keep in mind that this will reduce the time the library workshops are available to students before the deadline. The deadline for all quizzes is Wednesday, March 16, 2011.

Problems Accessing Ebsco Databases from Home

We're continuing to experience problems access Ebsco databases off-campus this morning. This includes Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete, Communication and Mass Media Complete, and many others.

One work-around is to access these databases remotely via OhioLINK authentication. Go to:

Locate your database by name, then click on the "Off-Campus URL." You will be prompted to select your school, and enter your name and barcode. Remember to enter your barcode (you can leave off the leading zeros) rather than your UAnet ID.

Don't See the Point of Twitter?

Well, you're probably not alone... Recently I was working with a group of students and they told me how they felt about Twitter. Here's an approximation of how the conversation went:

Me: "Don't any of you guys use Twitter?"
Student 1: "Why? What's the point?"
Student 2: "Yeah, if I want to tell someone I'm going to Taco Bell I'll post it on Facebook."

From this conversation (and other similar chats I've had with students recently) I see now that faculty and students don't see the potential of Twitter for receiving information. They just can't get past the expectation that you're supposed to post micro updates on your life that they are probably already doing (without the 140 character limit) on Facebook.

Here are some things to consider about Twitter:

You can have a Twitter account without any intention of posting updates on your life.
You can follow Twitter updates of people, companies, and organizations that are of interest to you. Many Twitter accounts offer updates on science, business, entertainment, and technology. Choose what you're interested in and get regular updates on what you're interested in.
Instead of filling up your email and Facebook news feed with updates from companies, etc., you can keep these on Twitter instead.
Many companies offer discounts and coupons to their Twitter followers.
Twitter can help you find a job. One of our library staff members found a fantastic job after seeing the opening listed on a Twitter post. (We miss you, Denise!!!)
If you have a smart phone you can download a Twitter app and read your updates anywhere.

In our effort to be life-long learners think about Twitter as a tool and a resource. By now I think it's safe to say that Twitter is not a fad and doesn't seem to be going anywhere any time soon. Take another look from this different perspective and I'm sure you'll see the potential. And don't forget to follow Wayne College Library to get our updates, too!

Fireside Readers Book Discussion Group

On December 6^th the book group will meet to discuss The Good Soldiers by David Finkel. The book details the last-chance moments of the war. In January 2007, President George W. Bush announced a new strategy for Iraq. He called it "the surge." "Many listening tonight will ask why this effort will succeed when previous operations to secure Baghdad did not. Well, here are the differences," he told a skeptical nation. Among those listening were the young, optimistic army infantry soldiers of the 2-16, the battalion nicknamed the Rangers. About to head to a vicious area of Baghdad, they decided the difference would be them.

Fifteen months later, the soldiers returned home forever changed. Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporter David Finkel was with them in Bagdad almost every grueling step of the way.

What was the true story of the surge? Was it really a success? Those are the questions he grapples with in his remarkable report from the front lines. In telling the story of these good soldiers, the heroes and the ruined, David Finkel has also produced an eternal tale--not just of the Iraq War, but of all wars, for all time.

Fireside Readers Book Discussion Group

On November 1^st, the group will meet to discuss the book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. The book details the true story of how a single, abbreviated life grew a seemingly immortal line of cells that made some of the most crucial innovations in modern science possible. Skloot has fashioned in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks a fascinating and moving story of medicine and family, and the intriguing details of how life is sustained in laboratories and in memory. Henrietta Lacks was a mother of five in Baltimore, a poor African American migrant from the tobacco farms of Virginia, who died from a cruelly aggressive cancer at the age of 30 in 1951. A sample of her cancerous tissue, taken without her knowledge or consent, as was the custom then, turned out to provide one of the holy grails of mid-century biology: human cells that could survive--even thrive--in the lab. Known as HeLa cells, their stunning potency gave scientists a building block for countless breakthroughs, beginning with the cure for polio.

Skloot tells the story of Henrietta Lacks, her family, and their fight to uncover the truth and the deception behind the use of Henrietta’s cells.

The book group will meet October 4^th to discuss the book The Soloist by Steve Lopez. The following is a brief description of the book detailing the true-life story of Steve Lopez and Nathaniel Ayers.

Scurrying back to his office one day, Lopez, a columnist for the L.A. Times, spots a homeless man coaxing beautiful sounds from a battered two-string violin. The man was Nathaniel Ayers, once a promising student at Julliard, forced to drop out when he developed schizophrenia.

Enlisting the help of doctors, mental health professionals and professional musicians, Lopez attempts to help Nathaniel move off Skid Row, regain his dignity, develop his musical talent and free himself of the demons induced by the schizophrenia. Throughout, Lopez endures disappointments and setbacks with Nathaniel's case, questions his own motives for helping his friend and acknowledges that Nathaniel has taught him about courage and humanity. With self-effacing humor, fast-paced yet elegant prose and unsparing honesty, Lopez tells an inspiring story of heartbreak and hope.

Fireside Readers Book Discussion Group

On September 13^th the book group will meet to discuss the book The Gardner Heist: The True Story of the World’s Largest Unsolved Art Theft by Ulrich Boser. The following is a brief description of the Boser’s story.

In the early morning hours of March 18, 1990, thieves posing as cops entered Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and left with a haul unrivaled in the art world, including three Rembrandts and a Vermeer, valued today at $600 million. Boser, a contributing editor at U.S. News and World Report, turned amateur sleuth after the death of a legendary independent fine arts claims adjuster, Harold Smith, who was haunted by the Gardner robbery. Boser carried on Smith’s work, pursuing leads as varied as the Boston mob and the IRA. Along the way, he visited felons—including the notorious art thief Myles Connor—and Bob Wittman, the FBI’s only art theft undercover agent. Boser’s rousing account of his years spent collecting clues large and small is entertaining enough to make readers almost forget that, after 18 years, the paintings have still not been found: the museum is offering a $5 million reward for information leading to their return.

On June 7^th the book group will meet to discuss We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of American Nurses Trapped on Bataan by the Japanese. The book written by Elizabeth M. Norman offers the inspirational, little-known story of the "Angels of Bataan," the American nurses who worked on Bataan and who were captured along with American soldiers after the fall of Corregidor during World War II. This book celebrates the heroism of the Army and Navy nurses imprisoned for three years in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp.

The book offers an insider's account of the nation's most famous school integration and recounts how the author made the decision to attend Arkansas's all-white Central High because of geographical practicality rather than a sense of heroism. The author describes the subsequent events and how they affected her family's beliefs about dedication, perseverance, and sacrifice.

OhioLINK Service Outage Planned

Easier Access to Library Resources From Home

"University Libraries, in collaboration with Information Technology Services (ITS), has implemented remote access to e-resources using UAnet ID and password. ITS has provided a secure proxy server and University Libraries has re-configured the links for thousands of e-resources – databases, e-journals and e-books – to authenticate users via this secure proxy server.

Users are no longer required to select, download, install, configure and run a VPN (virtual private network) client on their computers to access these e-resources remotely. Whether starting from the catalog or from the web site, users are simply prompted for their UAnet ID and password. Users running VPN for other reasons, such as access to departmental H-drives, may still choose to access library resources via VPN.

University Libraries has also deployed new library system software that enables users to manage their library accounts, renew materials and request materials from the UA Libraries Catalog or the OhioLINK Central Catalog using their UAnet ID and password instead of a special barcode and PIN."

Many students have already noticed how much easier it is to access resources from home. If you have any questions, just ask the library staff.

Women's History Display

March is National Women’s History Month and we encourage you to stop in the library and view our display. On exhibit are various materials including books and videos representing the many women that have made major accomplishments throughout history in the fields of science, literature, arts, and social activism. We have biographies on famous women from Joan of Arc and Marie Curie to Grandma Moses and Nancy Pelosi. This is a great starting point for students or anyone interested in increasing their knowledge of the roles women have played in American and world history.

Last night the Fireside Readers met to discuss Teddy Kennedy's memoir, True Compass. As usual, it was a lively discussion centered on the Senator's early life, personal scandal, family tragedies, and political achievements.

Librarian-Inspired New Year's Resolutions

This time of year many of us are thinking about eating healthy, exercising more, or maybe working on trimming down your debt. If you're like me, you're thinking, "How could I be more organized?" Because, let's face it, being organized can only help us meet our other goals.

If organizing is part of your plans for 2010, don't forget to spend time thinking about managing all of your social networking information. This is the perfect time to review your social tools like Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter. Close accounts that you no longer use and don't have time to update. Look at your friends / follow lists and hide or delete the ones that no longer interest you. (But be aware of the social implications of unfriending... Sometimes it's just better to hide them from your feeds).

If you use RSS Feeds, look through the blogs you follow. Review them and organize them into categories or delete the ones that are no longer relevant. I have found that I'll be more likely to review my feeds if I have whittled them down to the most essential feeds. If you have used RSS feeds to track information for your academic research, go through and delete the feeds that are no longer relevant to make room for Spring semester topics.

If you use social bookmarking tools like Delicious, review your bookmarks, deleting and tagging as you go.

Keeping your online information organized will only save time and make your online searching more efficient, so perhaps you can throw in that extra work out this week!

If you don't use any of these social tools, maybe you can add this to your list of resolutions: Attend the library's free workshop: "Internet Tools for Academic Research." We will teach you how to save time while searching online and we also teach how to make the most of social networking tools like blogs, wikis, social bookmarking, and RSS feeds.

Whatever you resolve to do this year, the library staff would like to wish you all the best that 2010 has to offer. As always, let us know what we can do to help you be successful with your research papers, speeches, and personal research.

In order to help our students do their best on their final exams, the library will be offering a quiet place for study during exam week, Monday, December 7th through Saturday, December 12th.

Students, faculty, and staff are asked to remain quiet in the library during this week and turn off their cell phones before they enter the library. Headphones are available at the information desk for anyone wishing to listen to audio on their computers.

Silence will be enforced in the table area, community room, and library lab. Students wishing to use the group study rooms are also asked to refrain from loud discussions and to close the door when studying with groups.

Fine Forgiveness for our Furry Friends Fundraiser!

We will be collecting items such as dog food, cat food, dry kitten food, cat litter, paper towels, hand sanitizer and blankets (lightly used is okay) for the Wayne County Humane Society. Library Workshop Deadline is Fast Approaching

All library workshop content needs to be completed and all quizzes and retakes submitted by Monday, October 26th.

Keep in mind that the library staff need 3 days to grade all quizzes, so this impacts how much time you have if you need to complete a retake.

Tutorials for each workshop take at least one hour each, so please leave plenty of time to complete the workshops.

New Databases Added

The University of Akron recently added two new databases from Congressional Quarterly:

CQ Weekly: CQ Weekly provides in-depth reports on issues looming on the congressional horizon, plus a complete wrap up the previous week's news, including the status of bills in play, behind-the-scenes maneuvering, committee and floor activity, debates and all roll-call votes.
CQ Researcher: CQ Researcher is noted for its in-depth, unbiased coverage of health, social trends, criminal justice, international affairs, education, the environment, technology, and the economy. Reports are published weekly in print and online 44 times a year.

These databases may be accessed on campus or remotely via the UA VPN (virtual private network).

Database Cancellations

Beginning July 1, several OhioLINK databases will no longer be available. The affected databases are funded through the combination of an Institute of Museum and Library Services LSTA grant awarded by the State Library of Ohio and the state appropriations of the Libraries Connect Ohio (LCO) partners, and are available to all Ohioans. LCO is a collaborative effort of OhioLINK, OPLIN, INFOhio, and the State Library of Ohio. Libraries Connect Ohio is constantly striving to provide the strongest portfolio of research resources possible within budgetary limitations to serve the diverse lifelong learning needs of all Ohioans.

The following databases will be modified or no longer be available as of July 1:

Consumer Health Complete (EBSCO) – Try Health Source Consumer Edition instead.
America's News Magazines (NewsBank) – Search for magazines in the E-Journal Finder instead.
America's Newspapers (NewsBank) – State and national papers will no longer be available, except for four major statewide newspapers -- the Columbus Dispatch, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Toledo Blade, and the Dayton Daily News (as well as archives of the Cincinnati Post). This package is being funded by the Ohio Public Library Information Network (OPLIN). If state budget developments reduce the OPLIN budget to the point where OPLIN cannot afford this newspaper package, then it will be discontinued before the fall term. For other newspaper coverage, try LexisNexis Academic and Newspaper Source instead.

Fireside Readers Meet on Monday

Next week the Fireside Readers will meet to discuss A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson.

The library will be continuing the “Textbooks on Reserve” pilot program for Spring 2009. Select textbooks will be available in the library on reserve. The books may be checked out for 2 hours at a time. Students must present a valid ZipCard in order to check out library materials.

The program includes required textbooks for courses that have the highest enrollment, like Effective Oral Communication, English Composition 111 and 112, Introduction to Psychology, and more. Fireside Readers December Selection

Meanwhile, Antonina kept her unusual household afloat, caring for both its human and its animal inhabitants--otters, a badger, hyena pups, lynxes--and keeping alive an atmosphere of play and innocence even as Europe crumbled around her.”

Do you need a quiet place to study?

The library staff ask that all students and staff make an effort to keep the library, library lab, and community room quiet and inviting places to study, work on projects, and use library materials. There are peak times, though, when the sheer number of students creates noise that some students find distracting.

To address the need for quiet study space, the library staff recently updated the group study room policy to allow for single library users to reserve a group study room. If you’re looking for a quiet place to study, consider reserving one of the three group study rooms. The rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis, unless a reservation has been made.

When events are not planned in the Community Room, this space is also available for quiet study.

If you are interested in hearing more about our group study rooms, please stop in or contact the library staff.

In November the Fireside Readers will meet to discuss Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee by Charles J. Shields.

Good Luck, Abby!

After several years of service in the library, Abby Silchuk is leaving Wayne College to pursue a full time position at the University of Akron Law Library.

Abby started as a student assistant in 2001 and was promoted to a staff library assistant position a few years later. Abby has left her mark in the library by developing the children’s literature collection, teachers resources, and most recently, the kit collection. Today the archives would still be a stack of smelly boxes and disorganized file cabinets if not for Abby’s tenacity and organizational skills!

We will all miss Abby’s presence at the information desk and behind the scenes, but wish her well as she continues her library career. Good luck, Abby!

Exam Week - The Library - A Quiet Place to Study

Enjoy the silence...
In order to help our students do their best on their final exams, the library will be offering a quiet place for study during exam week, Monday, May 5 through Saturday, May 10. Students, faculty, and staff are asked to remain quiet in the library during this week and turn off their cell phones before they enter the library.

Headphones are available at the information desk for anyone wishing to listen to audio on their computers. Silence will be enforced in the table area as well as the library lab. Students wishing to use the group study rooms are also asked to refrain from loud discussions and to close the door when studying with groups.

Full-text of the Wall Street Journal is also offered. You can use Factiva in conjunction with the library’s other business/financial/legal research databases - Lexis Nexis, Business Source Complete, Mergent, and ValueLine.

Food For Fines

For the month of MARCH, Wayne College Library will be accepting non-perishable food items in lieu of money owed on fines.

Canned and non-perishable food items will be accepted at one item for every dollar owed.

Donations will also be accepted.

Items most needed are:
-canned tuna
-canned fruit
-paper products
-baby food
-peanut butter

All items collected will be given to People to People Ministries.
